PM presents Biddick Hall Community Focus Group with Big Society Award
This month a local community group has received recognition from the government for the work it has done to improve Biddick Hall Estate in South Shields.
On 14 January Prime Minister David Cameron visited the North East to present Biddick Hall Community Focus Group – a project that works to improve the Biddick Hall community in terms of health, employment and activities for young people - with the Big Society Award.
Margaret Fairlamb, Chairwoman of Biddick Hall Community Focus Group said:
“We were shocked yet delighted to find out Biddick Hall Community Focus Group had won the Big Society Award as we weren’t even aware we had been nominated.
“It is fantastic to be recognised for our work on Biddick Hall Estate, which includes a multi-use games area for older children, a play park for younger children, a chemist, signage for the estate and lots of other projects.
“It was an honour that this to receive the award from the Prime Minister and also an offer to visit Downing Street for an award winners reception.
“We hope that this publicity attracts funding for our future projects, which include a community advice centre.”
The Big Society Awards are presented to organisations, businesses and individuals on a weekly basis that demonstrate best examples of the Big Society, for example those who are working to transform local communities and public services or volunteering their time for the benefit of others.
Biddick Hall Community Focus Group joins previous Big Society Award winners Greenwich Leisure Ltd and Yorkshire based organisations Altogether Better and CREATE.
