Northumbrian social enterprise winner in Low Carbon Communities Challenge
Northumberland based social enterprise CoRE (Community Renewable Energy), in partnership with Berwick Community Trust, has been announced as one of the ten winners of the Department of Energy and Climate Changes' 'Low Carbon Communities Challenge', and has been awarded up to £500,000 to test ways in which carbon emissions can be reduced at a community level.
The Low Carbon Communities Challenge is a two year research programme that aims to test delivery options to reduce the carbon footprints of communities by providing financial and advisory support to 'guinea pig' communities to allow them to develop bespoke local schemes that will improve the energy efficiency of the community.
CoRE will invest its grant in the installation of solar panels in 50 homes, while the revenue from the electricity generated will be fed back into the community and reinvested in further environmental and social programmes. Berwick CoRE, CoRE's joint venture will invest money in research into micro-renewables and behaviour change.
CoRE's projects will help to shape government policy and provide vital information in the role communities can play in reaching Britain's carbon reduction targets.
