Co-operatives urged to take part in first ever Co-operatives Fortnight

Co-operatives UK is calling for co-operatives and advocates of co-operatives across the country to take part in the Co-operatives Fortnight, which will run from 19 June to 3 July 2010, to help promote co-operatives as a better alternative and showcase what makes them and co-operation different.

The Co-operatives Fortnight is a groundbreaking new initiative that aims to raise awareness of co-operatives. Co-operatives UK has launched a new website - www.thereisanalternative.coop - to compliment the Co-operatives Fortnight Campaign.

The website features a range of tools to help co-operatives promote themselves during the Fortnight. Over the coming weeks, Co-operatives UK will update the website with new tools including resource packs, striking posters and simple guides, films and forums.

By joining in and doing something during the Co-operatives Fortnight, co-operatives will not only promote co-operation as a better alternative but will also help raise the profile of their own organisation.

Co-operatives UK will co-ordinate some of the major activities surrounding the Fortnight, including demonstrating the benefits of co-operation to business and society as well as the Co-operatives 2010 Conference, the flagship conference for the co-operative sector, held this year in Plymouth.

The Co-operatives Fortnight will conclude with the International Co-operatives Day, which celebrates co-operation across the globe.

Co-operatives Fortnight is sponsored by a number of co-operatives without which this initiative could not be possible. They include: The Co-operative Group, Midcounties Co-operative, The Southern Co-operative, Anglia Co-operative, Chelmsford Star Co-operative. Lincolnshire Co-operative and Channel Islands Co-operative Society.
