Co-operatives UK calls for members to get Greener Together
'Greener Together - the co-operative way' is a new project from Co-operatives UK to be conducted over six months which will investigate how people can make lifestyle changes in order to live more environmentally sustainable lives. Co-operatives UK is seeking to enlist 50 committed co-operatives and community owned enterprises from across England to work with their members to become greener and reduce their environmental impact in the areas of energy, waste and personal transport.
The project is part of the Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) sponsored Greener Living Fund and will focus on the small actions each individual can take in their daily lives to reduce their carbon footprint. The project will enable member organisations of Co-operatives UK, the Confederation of Co-operative Housing (CCH) and the Plunkett Foundation to work with their members and customers to encourage greener behaviour.
Organisations that apply to be part of the project will choose from a number of environmental actions based around the home, and each action will produce a representative redcution in carbon emissions. Organisations will then encourage their members and customers to pledge to reduce their CO2 emissions by 10% to 20% in two of the three key areas (energy, waste and personal transport) over the six month period of the project.
Each co-operative or community owned enterprise that is successful in applying to the project will receive financial support of up to £2,000 to aid the active involvement of their members and customers.
For more information on the project and details of how to apply please visit the Greener Together website or contact Michelle Lockwood on 0161 246 3287 or email michelle.lockwood@cooperatives-uk.coop.
All application forms must be received by 11 January 2010.
