Action for Blind People create SEED project
What is it?
The SEED (Social Enterprise and Employment Development) Project has been developed to provide work experience placements for blind and partially sighted people within social enterprises and Action for Blind People is keen to work with social enterprises throughout the North East to offer such placements.
Why?
One of the biggest challenges facing people who are blind or partially sighted is overcoming the myths and breaking through the barriers that prevent them from gaining employment. GIven the right opportunities and support, blind and partially sighted people can add real value to your organisation.
By their very nature, social enterprises are supportive environments for staff and by offering placements in this kind of setting, they can help blind and partially sighted people to boost their skills and self confidence and move closer to securing meaningful employment.
The Placements
The work experience placements will take the form of:
- Work Taster Sessions - these sessions will give beneficiaries the chance to 'sample' a job or vocational area they are interested in.
- Work Experience Placements - these sessions will provide trainees with a more in-depth experience of work and work-based practice.
- Trainee Placements - these are a limited number of 6 month paid placements, providing participants with a fully supported experience of work and the chance to engage in a 'real' job.
What's in it for the social enterprise?
Why should social enterprises provide placements to blind and partially sighted people?
- More customers! A diverse workforce is a reflection of your customer base. Disabled people spend money too so why not get a share of the market?
- Helps towards Corporate Social Responsibility
- Supporting disabled people can attract potential funding streams, funders and procurement opportunities
And of course, the SEED team will support social enterprises throughout by providing:
- Specialist equipment advice
- Equipment loan
- Health and Safety Monitoring
- Visual Awareness Training
- Recruitment, Training and Retention Advice
- Referrals to additional support available from Action for Blind People
