Mentoring for Success in Social Enterprise

Mentoring for Success in Social Enterprise

Working within a social enterprise you’ll have faced the same challenges confronting all businesses. But on top of those you’ll also have factored your social objectives into your decision making. Anyone new to juggling the needs of social enterprises can expect to find their head spinning.

Which is where you come in?

Mentoring is about acting as a sounding-board, giving a dispassionate view, helping to sort the wood from the trees. It’s about people like you who have ‘been there and done it’ informally sharing a little of their experience and understanding.

We know that the benefits mentoring brings are enormous (and measurable in terms of, for example, business survival and growth rates) so a free training programme called Get Mentoring has been established to build and support a community of enterprise mentors who can help each other to succeed.

It’s not just a one way street either. Mentors are often surprised at what they gain from the experience by challenging their own long-held assumptions and seeing the world from a different perspective.

It’s important that those who need them can tap into the skills, networks and insights that people who have run successful social enterprises have built over time if the social economy is to have the positive impact on society we’ve all worked for.

So, hold a hand, lend an ear, shed a little light, point a way - let's all Get Mentoring!

Get Mentoring, led by the Small Firms Enterprise Development Initiative (SFEDI), is part of a major government initiative to train those who work with, in and for small businesses to become business mentors. Once you’ve completed the training you’ll receive a year’s free membership to the IOEE (Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurs) which normally cost £75, and SFEDI Certificate of Recognition which will allow you to deliver mentoring to any type of micro, small and medium sized business. Once recognised as a mentor, all we ask is that you commit at least one hour a month free mentoring.
